Description

A framed map of Ballygorian More and its neighbouring townlands.

A thoughtful keepsake for anyone who feels a connection to Ballygorian More, near or far.

About Ballygorian More

Ballygorian More is the larger companion to Ballygorian Beg, a townland of about 672 acres with its smaller neighbour on the east. The Irish form Baile Ó gCorraín Mór is treated carefully, perhaps meaning “Curreen’s” or “Curran’s townland, great”.

About Townlands

Townlands are the smallest land units in these place records, but their roots are much older than the modern map. Many existed before nineteenth-century standardisation, and the townland system is commonly traced to medieval Gaelic land division before the Anglo-Norman invasion.

Their Irish name, baile fearainn, is usually understood through fearann, a word carrying meanings of land, territory, domain, farm or portion. The names themselves often preserve older clues about landscape, settlement, ownership, farming use and local memory.
