About County Antrim

County Antrim is a county in Ulster. Its name comes from the town of Antrim, from Irish Aontroim, meaning “lone ridge”; an older alternative form, Aontreibh, meant “lone dwelling”. The county was already a recognised division by the time of the sixteenth-century shiring of Ulster.

About Counties

Counties are large administrative units established between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. They shaped courts, taxation, land records, local government and identity, and they remain one of the most familiar ways to describe place in Ireland today.
