About Ulster
Ulster is Ireland's northern province, made up of the nine historic counties of Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Derry, Monaghan and Tyrone. Its Irish name, Cúige Uladh, preserves the Ulaid, the people and over-kingdom remembered in the province's Irish-language name.
About Provinces
Provinces are the broadest historic regions beneath Ireland. The Irish word cúige means both one of Ireland's five historic divisions and a province, so names like Cúige Uladh, Cúige Mumhan, Cúige Laighean and Cúige Chonnacht carry the older idea of Ireland divided into fifths.
The four modern provinces are geographical divisions of Ireland, though five provinces are remembered historically. They are best read as cultural and historical regions rather than current administrative areas.
