Description

A framed map of Cavan and its neighbouring townlands.

A thoughtful keepsake for anyone who feels a connection to Cavan, near or far.

About Cavan

Cavan is a compact townland of about 182 acres in Clonduff civil parish. The Irish form Cabhán is interpreted here with caution as perhaps a “round” or “small hill”.

About Townlands

Townlands are the smallest land units in these place records, but their roots are much older than the modern map. Many existed before nineteenth-century standardisation, and the townland system is commonly traced to medieval Gaelic land division before the Anglo-Norman invasion.

Their Irish name, baile fearainn, is usually understood through fearann, a word carrying meanings of land, territory, domain, farm or portion. The names themselves often preserve older clues about landscape, settlement, ownership, farming use and local memory.
